July 10th – Day 36 in the Adventure

Chasing the Storm
On July 10th, the remnants of Hurricane Beryl were steadily making their way into Canada, promising a day filled with urgency and unpredictability. I woke up early, feeling the weight of the impending storm. The advancing storm system meant I had only a few hours to get ahead before it struck. Determined and focused, I quickly showered and was out the door within 15 minutes, ready to face the challenges that lay ahead.
Starting my journey in Massey, I immediately set my sights on Sault Ste. Marie, a coastal city that marked the next significant milestone on my adventure. The drive along the coast was both stunning and daunting. The sky was a canvas of ominous clouds, a constant reminder of the approaching storm. The urgency to stay ahead of Hurricane Beryl added a layer of intensity to the day's journey.
The experience was a blend of awe and tension. On one hand, the raw power of nature was on full display, a reminder of the forces that shape our world. On the other hand, the need to stay ahead of the storm was a constant pressure, pushing me to maintain focus and speed. The journey to Sault Ste. Marie was not just a physical drive but an emotional and mental test, challenging my resilience and determination.
Crossing the Border
As I approached the border at Sault Ste. Marie, I was met with an unexpected delay—a 30-minute wait to enter the United States. The border was unusually backed up, adding a bit of tension to my journey. This prolonged wait was a test of patience, yet it also provided me an opportunity to reflect on the miles I had already traversed. The steady stream of vehicles moving slowly towards the checkpoint mirrored the anticipation building within me.
The formalities completed, I was officially on my way to Naubinway, Michigan. This crossing marked a significant milestone in my adventure, bridging two nations and two segments of my journey. The sense of accomplishment was palpable, as was the excitement for the next leg of the trip.
Despite the initial frustration, the experience of crossing the border was enriching. It reminded me of the interconnectedness of our travels, the small yet significant moments that shape our experiences. The delay, though inconvenient, added depth to the narrative of my adventure, emphasizing the unpredictability and the resilience required in such endeavors.
As I continued my journey towards Naubinway, the landscape began to change, signaling the start of a new chapter. The sense of relief from having crossed the border seamlessly blended with the excitement for the unknown roads ahead. This transition from one country to another was not just a geographical shift but a metaphorical one as well, signifying progress and the relentless forward motion of the adventure.
Exploring Naubinway
Upon arriving in Naubinway, Michigan, I was greeted by the serene beauty of the northernmost part of Lake Michigan. The scenery was nothing short of breathtaking, offering a moment of peace and reflection after the morning's rush. The tranquil waters and lush surroundings provided the perfect backdrop for a brief respite, allowing me to savor the natural splendor that this part of Michigan has to offer.
One of the highlights of my visit to Naubinway was the Top-of-the-Lake Snowmobile Museum. This unique museum offered a fascinating glimpse into the history and culture of snowmobiling, a popular winter activity in the region. The museum's extensive collection of snowmobiles, memorabilia, and historical artifacts provided a comprehensive overview of the evolution of this beloved sport. From vintage models to modern machines, each exhibit told a story of innovation, adventure, and community. It was a captivating experience that deepened my appreciation for the local culture and the role snowmobiling plays in the lives of many residents.
As the day drew to a close, I felt a sense of accomplishment. The exploration of Naubinway had not only enriched my knowledge but also provided a much-needed connection with nature. With the plan to head to Rhinelander, Wisconsin, the following day, I ended the day with a mix of contentment and anticipation. The adventures ahead promised new discoveries and experiences, making the journey through the Upper Peninsula of Michigan an unforgettable chapter in my travels.
