Day 5 — Zadar, Wings for Life, and Yara’s Secret German Skills

Day 5 in Zadar started with a surprise: the Wings for Life World Run was happening today, which meant runners everywhere. Streets full, waterfront full, cafés full — the whole city buzzing with energy. Yara claimed they were “obviously here to see her,” which is bold considering none of them knew she existed.

We joined a guided tour of the Old City, and it was a great way to get our bearings. We hit several major sites, including:

  • The Roman Forum — built in the 1st century BC, once the center of public life. Yara said it needed “more statues of her.”

  • St. Donatus Church — a massive 9th‑century round church built on top of Roman ruins. Yara asked if she could “reserve it for personal events.”

  • The Cathedral of St. Anastasia — the largest cathedral in Dalmatia, dating back to the 12th century. Yara said the bell tower had “potential” if they added a balcony for her.

  • The City Walls and Land Gate — Venetian‑built fortifications from the 1500s. Yara said they were “nice, but not very defensible against admirers.”

Zadar’s history is incredible — Roman, Byzantine, Venetian, Austrian, Croatian — layers on layers. Yara, of course, claimed she “knew all this already.”

There also seemed to be a huge number of German visitors in town, probably for the run. And that’s when Yara shocked me again: she suddenly started speaking fluent German to one of them. I have no idea what she said, but the guy kept looking at me and laughing. I’m sure it was flattering. Probably.

We wrapped up the day wandering the waterfront, watching runners, tourists, and locals all blend together. Yara spent most of the afternoon demanding photos, pointing at boats, and occasionally shouting German phrases at passing runners like she was coaching them.

Zadar is lively, beautiful, and full of surprises — and apparently, so is Yara.
