Day 3 — Rainy Zagreb and Yara’s War With the Weather

Day 3 in Zagreb came with steady, gray rain — the kind that makes the whole city look like it’s been lightly steamed. Yara was not having it. The moment we stepped outside, she let out a dramatic groan and informed me that she “did not travel internationally for moisture.” I reminded her that with her fair porcelain skin, she should actually be grateful for the cloud cover. She responded with something in Croatian that I’m fairly certain would get censored on television.

At one point she even tried to negotiate with the rain itself. She stared up at the sky and said, in perfect Croatian, “You will stop now.” The rain did not stop. She blamed me.

Despite the weather, we visited the World War II tunnel. I found it fascinating — the history, the atmosphere, the echo of footsteps. Yara, however, had “concerns.” She kept glancing around like she expected the walls to close in, and asked if the tunnel had been “structurally certified for delicate beauty.” I told her she’d be fine unless she started another beauty duel down there.

The rain kept coming, and eventually Yara demanded her own umbrella — “just a small one, the size of a bottle cap.” I told her that wasn’t a thing. She told me to “think bigger,” which is ironic coming from someone who fits in my back pocket.

We didn’t do much shopping or wandering today thanks to the weather, but we still covered plenty of ground. Yara spent part of the afternoon tucked into my back pocket again, peeking out like a tiny, judgmental periscope. Every time someone walked by with an umbrella, she muttered critiques about color choices and structural integrity.

Tomorrow we head to Zadar — sun, sea, and hopefully fewer arguments between Yara and the atmosphere.
